GREEK SPORTING MISSIONARIES RAISE OLYMPIC FLAG

Two men from Thessalonica, bearing the Athenian Olympic torch, yesterday held a flag-raising ceremony accompanied by minister Ernest Britto at the Pillars of Hercules Monument at Jew’s Gate.
President of the Greek National Nautical Club Thomas Panagiotopoulos and his companion Anastasios Vasvaros set out from Thessalonica on 30 July to ‘spread a message of peace and goodwill’ in time for the Olympic games. Their 4000-mile journey, which has taken them to a number of symbolic ports such as Athens, Calvary, Carthagenia, Menorca and Palermo, was sponsored by the Greek Ministry for Civilisation, and the flag they raised at the ceremony yesterday was an original handed to them by the Ministry.
The travellers, arriving yesterday on an inflatable vessel, said Gibraltar was the most symbolic of all ports because of its significance as one of the Pillars of Hercules, the mythical Greek hero. The ceremony was also attended by members of the Gibraltar sports council, and a handful of Greek nationals who heard about the event, include the manager of Vemaoil Shipping.
Mr Britto, attending the event in the place of sports and heritage minister Clive Beltran who is currently in Athens, thanked the crew members for their visit and wished them all the best for their journey back to Greece. Mr Britto hosted a reception party at the Rotal Gibraltar Yacht Club in honour of the visitors.
